Copenhagen Airports agrees new airport charges

Copenhagen Airports said on Monday it had agreed a new system of airport charges and would invest at least 2.6 billion crowns ($508 million) in infrastructure expansion and improvements.

The investments of at least 500 million crowns per year on average would be made from Jan. 1 next year to March 31, 2015, Copenhagen Airports said in a statement.

"Over the coming five years, Copenhagen Airport will invest more than 2.6 billion Danish crowns in facilities such as baggage handling, jet bridges, gates and check-in facilities for the benefit of both airlines and passengers," the company said.

The deal includes a provision for further investment proposed by airlines to be offset through changes in charge, it said.

In a bid to maintain and expand its position as a Scandinavian hub, the airport operator, 53.7-percent owned by Australia's Macquarie Airports, said the new charges deal with carriers, including Scandinavian airline SAS, runs from Oct. 1 this year to March 31, 2015.

Charges would remain unchanged for 18 months from Oct. 1 this year, but then rise 1 percent faster per year than the annual increase in the Danish Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the next four years, Copenhagen Airports said.

Also as part of the agreement, Copenhagen Airports will increase the proportion of charges related directly to passenger numbers rather than aircraft weight, and introduce an emissions charging scheme from April 2010 to favour the use of environmentally friendly aircraft, the company said.

In 2010, the airport will open a low-cost pier, for which charges will be negotiated separately, it said.
