Airport charges - new rules could mean cheaper flights

Airport charges are one of the hidden costs of flying and usually they are passed on from airlines to passengers. Wednesday evening sees MEPs debate whether to support a proposed directive which aims to set common rules for how charges are calculated. It could affect Europe's biggest airports and help introduce more competition between them.(European Parliament, Oct, 21)

Ryanair charges customers 'fantasy' EUR15 fees

RYANAIR passengers at Cork Airport are being charged more than 15Euro per head in "taxes and fees" that the airline does not have to pay, the Irish Independent has learned. The airport charges only apply to a route a year after its introduction, but the budget airline is charging customers travelling on the eight-month-old Glasgow and East Midlands routes. Aviation sources said yesterday that Ryanair, which has now axed these two routes, was turning a huge profit by charging consumers for fantasy costs.

Ryanair blames Dublin airport charges for reduction in frequency AGAIN

AGAIN Ryanair will cut its winter schedule at Dublin, reducing based aircraft to 18 from 22 and the number of weekly flights to 1,190 from 1,352. It estimated a passenger decline of around 500,000 from winter 2007-08. It said DUB is the second most expensive of its base airports and that a written request to the airport to have fees reduced was "dismissed by the DAA monopoly." It said the airport charges up to 15Euro ($23.84) per departing passenger. DUB suffered from radar problems last week, forcing cancellations (ATWOnline, July 14).
